What would you like your character's tag to be?: Bucky Barnes

In 300-500 words total, tell us your...
Character's background (their past and present) and character's personality:
WW2 Bucky
Bucky Barnes was a New Yorker through and through. He was from Brooklyn and had an ‘all American look’ (something the Soviets would later use to their advantage). His personality was warm and witty and he has a strong need to serve and protect. He was quick to befriend people, especially little, weedy guys who got picked on by bullies, like Steve Rogers. He was always quick to stand up for the little guy. More than once he stepped into a fight to protect Steve and even the odds. It translated into his job. He joined up as a soldier after Pearl Harbour to put an end to the biggest bully of all - Hitler.

As a soldier, Bucky displayed great intelligence and intuitiveness and a little rebellion for authority. He set up a black-market for contraband items for the soldiers in camp. A blind eye was turned to it as Bucky was often selected for more covert missions. He had been a quick study of hand to hand combat and was a natural scout. He never pushed to lead but challenged authority as and when he needed to with a little tongue and cheek. This was displayed when Steve formed the Howling Commandos. When he was asked if he would follow Captain American into battle, he replied ‘Hell no, that little guy from Brooklyn who was too dumb not to run away from a fight. I'm following him.’

Bucky can be prideful. He’s a New York boy and is proud of it. He has an easy way with the ladies, and easily finds two girls to accompany him and Steve to the Stark Expo (before Steve got his good looks). He is a little miffed that Steve gets more attention from the girls once he is Captain America. Peggy barely gives him a second glance. He tries his usual charm and flirtations, even when she says no.

It is common for Bucky to deflect with quips and charm, when he is rejected or hurt. When Steve finds him at the Hydra base, locked up and experimented on, some of the first words out of his mouth are ‘I thought you were smaller.’ Later when they face the Red Skull, and are in real danger, they see the Red Skull’s real face and he quips ‘You don’t have one of those do you?”

In the preview comic, it tells us he was suffering from hypothermia at the time of his rescue which would have given him an out from the war. Bucky doesn’t take it because Steve was still fighting. It showed the depth of their friendship and Bucky’s loyalty to his friends that he continued to follow his best friend into battle. Despite having no super powers, he was always at Steve’s side. The friendship was deep on both sides as shown by Steve going thirty miles behind enemies lines just to get Bucky back.

Bucky continued to follow Steve, right up until the ill fated train mission where Bucky met his ‘death’.

The Winter Soldier
Bucky’s body was recovered by Soviet soldiers who were looking for Captain America’s body to extract the super soldier serum from. They warmed up his body to extract the blood. When they found no trace of the serum, the found another use for Bucky. His body was shocked back to life and Bucky returned with no memories.
The Soviets used memory implants to give Bucky the world view the wanted and taught him to hate America. They honed his skills as a sniper and a spy and Bucky became their assassin. He took key targets that shaped the cold war. He was a ruthless puppet. However, the longer Bucky was awake they more he showed signs of memories returning, he began to question orders and seemed unsure on dates. Drastic measure was taken, they used shocked therapy on him each time to reset him to a blank slate’- a mans without emotion or ethics, or memories of anything he had previously done. At some point, Hydra came in and replaced Bucky’s arm with a bionic one. One that was stronger than any human’s and made him all the more ruthless in battle.

During ‘The Winter Soldier’ Bucky meets Captain America and Steve recognises him. Bucky does not have the same instant recognition, he treats Steve as a target and a threat. However, once he is away from Steve, he seemed confused. He turned on the Hydra agents and claimed he knew Steve. Shock therapy was used again. However his connection with Steve proved to be stronger.

When he battled with Steve on the carrier, Steve continued to try and get through to Bucky. Bucky’s memories were associated with the pain of the shock treatment and he reacted angrily to try and prevent them coming back. He repeatedly told Steve that he was wrong. However when the carrier sank, some of the hidden emotion and memories linked to Steve proved stronger than his training. He rescued Steve from the water and vanished. He was later seen at the Captain America exhibition, reading about Bucky.

Bucky will come into the game from this point. He is still conflicted between what he was programmed to be and the memories that are coming back. Through his interaction with his own cast, and others, he will continue to regain his memories. There are times he will revert to his training but this will become less as time goes on.

Character's skills/abilities/powers: B
Expert marksman : in sharpshooting and knife throwing. As the Winter Soldier, Bucky was responsible for many political assassinations

Martial Arts: During WW2 he was trained by expert hand to hand combat specialists. This skill set widened to include multiple martial arts and acrobatics at the sands of the Soviet Union

Multi-lingual: English, Russian, German, Japanese

Strategist, spy and scout: During WW2, Bucky was a gifted scout and he helped Steve to plan routes in and out as they took down the Hydra Bases. He learned stealth, demolition and survival, and this was again enhanced by the Soviets.

Bionic Arm
Bucky’’s arm gives him super human strength when he uses it. It has sensors in it which prevent it setting off other metal detectors, as well as concealing his weapons from such scanners. An electromagnetic pulse may render the arm’s capabilities useless.

Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.: Bionic arm, modified hand gun, sniper riffle and 2 combat knives.

Are you bringing your character to [community profile] ten_fwd from another game? If you are, which game?: no
Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them?
There are things from the Winter Soldier days that I'm just remembering. Weapons left in the field... Dangers I can still prevent. I think maybe that's the path... A way to the redemption I've been looking for.

This is a quote from comic Bucky. I am bringing Bucky from the end credits of the Winter Solider, when he is beginning to remember who he is. I want to explore how he puts himself back together, and how in a game setting he will look for redemption for what he has done. What better way to do it trapped on a ship with people where he can’t escape his memories, and has no missions. Later on planets, I look forward to him seeking redemption by helping anyone in danger.

Writing Sample #1:
“Bucky.” There was the name again. He woke from him dream in a cold sweat and rested his fave between his hands. His head hurt. The image of two boys sneaking a free ride on a tram danced on the inside of his eyelids. It seemed important that he should remember them. He pressed the heel of his hand to forehead. Everything was jumbled. The harder he tried to remember, the more the pressure built up in his head.

He tried not to think of anything, he should obey, not question. There was no one left to obey. No sleeper agents came looking for him. He was alone. He did not know if he was ‘Winter’ or ‘Bucky’. His hand tightened in his hair. Steve. Steve would have the answers but he was a mission. The mission. No not anymore. He was the boy in the dream.

He recited the file on Bucky from the museum. There were increasing flashes of the train. Then pain. Blankness. Training. He shook his head to clear his thoughts again. He had to go home…to New York.

At the shelter he slept in, he stole a fresh set of clothes and a wallet from a volunteer with cash and an id. He changed and slipped out into the crowds. Out of habit he drew a baseball cap down over his eyes so no cctv cameras would register his presence. Somehow he knew Steve would be looking for him ’Till the end of the line but he wasn’t ready to be found. If his life as Winter was a lie, he wanted to find the truth for himself rather than be fed more lies.

He joined the crowds waiting for the train and looked up at an advert. ‘Captain America, hero’. He heard a voice in his head that sounded similar to his own. ‘Captain America, here to all dancing girls.’ The voice sounded happy. He experienced a pang of regret that he did not remember how to feel an emotion like that.
